November 2010:
On arriving at their new home, the Pughs were pleased to discover a little shop in the village down by the river where they can buy some things (tomatoes, onions and a green vegetable) and spaghetti!! Miriam walks 5 miles to a market where she can get a wider selection of vegetables and fruit once a month. They received incredible hospitality from the local family they stayed with to begin with, and from another lady who was cooking for them initially. When Miriam invited her back she was astonished to find that Miriam could cook! She has actually learnt some new cooking skills too, e.g. making bread in a charcoal oven, and pancakes and chapattis. The house have a roof-top water tank which is low at the moment, but they expect the rains soon.
There are hundreds of children in their village! Most afternoons they have 20 children at their house, so the children have made friends. There is a lovely Tanzanian Pastor and his family nearby (they have to learn the Chasi language too) and the rest of the team are not far away.
July 2010 (Excerpts from Newsletter)
This is a time for us of getting down to the business of the details…
There is still much to be done in terms of clearing our house, finishing our studies, sorting out the finer details of home schooling, communicating to people, and so on. We have seen many tremendous- at times surprising- opportunities, help and support from people.
It has definitely also been a time for TALKING- an occupation particularly close to Miriam’s heart! In June, Thursday Club gave us a chance to talk about what we were going to do- this involved the children as well as Owen and Miriam. Miriam had the opportunity to talk to prayer groups, a youth group, and a year 8 group from a local secondary school about mission and specifically the work amongst the Wasi. We have also found ourselves chatting about the Wasi at most social gatherings we have attended in the last months (!) and it has been an honour to see people engaging with the Wasi in many ways- Miriam had a commitment to pray for us from a complete stranger at one of the children’s sports presentations just a few days ago!
We have also had lots of amazing encouragements in terms of financial support. In the few months since March, we have seen different people and churches give generously to us. But we are not there yet.
We do now have a deadline of July 31st, by which our support needs to be either given or pledged. This is a significant date for us, because if we still have insufficient funds on that date, we will not be able to go to Tanzania at the end of September. But in all this we are confident that God is faithful and it is GOOD to learn how to trust more!!
